Ummm... my BlackBerry has GMaps+GPS and NO support?

Official Google Blog: Cingular BlackBerry 8800 has Google Maps and GPS

Steve acts like this is some new development in phones... yet my BlackBerry 8703e has full GPS support, runs Google Maps, and does not benefit from this special code unlock that google has provided for these 8800 phones.

Why?

Oh... my phone runs on Sprint PCS network. Perhaps Sprint hasn't paid google for the favor yet?

Just in the way of curiosity. Did you down load the latest GMM? The latest bits have only been out a few weeks version (1.5.2). It may be a case that you are running the old version.

I don't know if that is the case or not, just my observation.

Yes I have the latest GMM. No GPS support, except for some external bluetooth link support.

You've got it backwards. It's Sprint who won't allow third-party
applications to access your phone's GPS device unless some money
changes hands.

No, I don't have it backwards. I've already used third party applications that use the GPS capabilities, and these are very small developers that have not paid Sprint anything.

yeah, I was reading someone elses blog post about this issue...Id have to agree with them that I too hate carrier specific tools. I love Google and their products and wish it was more widely available.

Im on sprint too. What 3rd party app are you using now?

I tried a few free apps that used GPS, but they sucked so I uninstalled them. Hence my real frustration that Google hasn't enabled this on their mmaps yet. :-(

ChronicleRoad was one. I forget the names of the others.
